C.O.C. Is Working On ‘Brutal-Sounding’ New Album

May 17, 2023

We knew about this story a handful of months back. Now, Corrosion Of Conformity has confirmed the the return of drummer Stanton Moore on their new ‘brutal-sounding’ album! The new album follows-up 2018’s “No Cross No Crown” and is due next year.

Bassist Mike Dean and guitarist Woody Weatherman did an interview with EonMusic ahead of their European tour and talked about the loss of drummer Reed Mullin, who passed away in January 2020 at the age of 53.

Dean said, “It’s a shock when you really realize [that he’s gone for good]”. Yeah, it was kind of a shock, yeah. Such an important musical contributor. Definitely an innovator. You can’t replace him, for sure.”

Weatherman added, “Nobody really plays like Reed. But it’s all part of moving forward. We miss him.”

You’ll remember that Moore played on the band’s 2005 album “In The Arms Of God” and the band were open to having him back.

Dean said, “We’ve been down to New Orleans and had a little writing session. We got together and picked it up pretty much where we left off.”

Weatherman added, “We turned the embers over a couple of times, rebuilding the fire.”

Dean talked about what Moore brings to recording new music, He’s amped to do it, and he’s got his indomitable style, so that’s a good way to follow up the last one, for sure.”

Weatherman on how Moore came to be involved again, “He kind of spearheaded it, if recollection is clear, because him and Pepper [Keenan, guitar/vocals], they both live in New Orleans. He expressed his interest, and we were, like, ‘Yes, that would be awesome, if, you know, if you got the time.’ I mean, we’ll make up time and we’ll do it.”

As for what you can expect the album to sound like, Dean said, “It’s hard to say. I think you’ll hear some new ideas, but I think you’ll hear a little bit of the ‘In The Arms Of God’ vibe because that’s where we’re picking up with, in terms of jamming with Stanton. And he’ll have his Stantonisms.”

Weatherman added, “It’s pretty brutal sounding. We’re jamming a couple up that show promise. I mean, you never know what will happen.”

If you’re not super familiar with Stanton Moore, google search this guy. He’s a beast of a drummer, Grammy winner, born and raised in New Orleans and I can’t wait to hear him back with C.O.C.!
