Anyone have Beyoncé getting a course at Yale on their bingo card? No kidding. A course dedicated to the superstar is coming to Yale University.
Yep. You read that right.
The course is called Beyoncé Makes History: Black Radical Tradition History, Culture, Theory & Politics through Music, and will look at her work from her 2013 self-titled album to 2024’s ‘Cowboy Carter’, and study Black history, intellectual thought and performance.
So let’s say you take this Beyoncé course. What are you gonna do? Well, students will participate in screenings of the ‘Drunk In Love’ singer’s visual albums, discussions on works about her from various scholars, create playlists linking her discography to her musical predecessors and more.
Hey, think of the job opportunities once you graduate!
If you think this Beyoncé course is odd, it’s not the first of its kind. There are other university classes dedicated to pop stars; Taylor Swift in particular has been the subject of many, including a ‘Psychology of Taylor Swift course at Arizona State University, a class at Stanford University which dissects Taylor’s ‘All Too Well (10 Minute Version’ and a UC Berkeley course that explores her business success. These were announced in the last year alone.
Who else? How about Kanye West? He was the subject of a course at Montreal’s Concordia University in 2022. They called it Kanye vs. Ye: Genius By Design. Students looked at his overall career, from starting as a producer in Chicago, to his fame with albums like ‘College Dropout’ and ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.’
And Dead Heads can dive into the music and culture of The Grateful Dead with an online course with Stanford Univesity.
Who knew?!
How much would you be willing to pay to take this Beyoncé course at Yale?
