Woohoo! The Simpsons return to theatres in 2027

D’oh! It’s finally happening. The Simpsons Movie is getting a sequel, and it hits theatres July 23, 2027.

That’s a full 20 years since Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie first made the leap to the big screen. Disney’s 20th Century Studios dropped the news yesterday (Sept. 29), teasing fans with a pink sprinkled donut and the tagline: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.”

Fun fact: that date was originally held for a Marvel project, but with that now scrapped, the MCU will have a rare gap between Avengers: Doomsday (Dec. 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (Dec. 2027). Which means Springfield gets the spotlight!

The first Simpsons Movie (2007) was a monster hit, pulling in over half a billion worldwide on a $75 million budget. You’ll remember Homer’s pet pig, Spider-Pig, sparking an eco-disaster that landed Springfield under a giant glass dome.

So, what’s next?

The idea of a sequel has been floating around for years. Remember, back in 2015, producer Al Jean said it was a “50/50 possibility” and in 2019, creator Matt Groening flat-out said he had “no doubt” it would happen “one of these days.”

Meanwhile, the TV juggernaut isn’t slowing down. Season 37 just premiered on Sunday night (Sept. 28), with the series set to cross its 800th episode milestone this run. Showrunner Matt Selman says don’t expect South Park–style political hot takes anytime soon: “It’s more about a town of good-natured dum-dums dealing with a changing world.”

Personally? Can’t wait to see what kind of trouble Homer’s donut cravings get him into this time.
