Watch Clips Of Alex Van Halen’s Culver City Event Talking About His Memoir ‘Brothers’

Van Halen drummer Alex Van Halen released his memoir, “Brothers”, on October 22. He recently did an event at Robert Frost Auditorium in Culver City, California, with Ariel Levy hosting, and talked about his family, friendship, music and brotherly love!

As you likely know, Alex is co-founded Van Halen with his late brother, Eddie Van Halen. He was born in Amsterdam and trained as a classical pianist, and graduated from Pasadena High School.

Levy collaborated with Alex on “Brothers” and is the author of her own The New York Times best-selling memoir “The Rules Do Not Apply”. She has received a National Magazine Award for her work at The New Yorker, where she has been a staff writer since 2008. She is also host and co-creator of the podcast “The Just Enough Family”.

Alex Van Halen wrote “Brothers” as a love letter to his younger brother Eddie, while still mourning his death.

He recounts moving from the Netherlands, growing up in Pasadena, in an 800-square foot house,  in Pasadena, with a travelling musician father and proper Indonesian-born mother. And the struggle to fit in. He talks about musical politics, in-fighting and the bad boy lifestyle.

In the book, you’ll see never-before-seen photos from Alex’s private archives, setting the record straight on his brother’s life and death.

We wrote about this a while back – the audiobook of “Brothers” has a previously unreleased song composed by Alex and his brother. It’s called “Unfinished”, and you can hear it as Alex narrates.

Of course, Van Halen is one of the biggest rock bands ever, with huge hits like “Runnin’ With The Devil”, “Dance The Night Away”, “Hot For Teacher”, “Panama” and “Jump”. They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007.

Modern Drummer says Alex Is instrumental to Van Halen’s sound. No shit, Sherlocke.

When Alex turned 68 in May 2021, he shared this online, “First birthday without you, Ed. The view from my drum set will never be the same. VH forever!”. Eddie died on October 2020 at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California, from complications due to cancer.

RIP to an absolute legend!

Haven’t read Alex’s book yet, but that’s definitely on the must-read list! What’s your favourite rock book?
