Some bands leave behind albums. Black Sabbath left behind an entire genre.
Now, for the first time, you can read the band’s story in an official book created with the musicians who lived it, preserving one of rock’s greatest legacies from the beginning to the end.
Shipping in October 2026, The Masters Of Reality: Why Black Sabbath Matter was created by legendary photographer Ross Halfin in direct collaboration with Black Sabbath. The 500-page volume traces the band’s history from the late 1960s through the emotional Back To The Beginning farewell concert in July 2025.
Filled with rare photographs and memorabilia, much of it published for the first time, the book focuses on the classic lineup of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward. It also features essays by Geoff Barton and Dave Ling, who interviewed all four members specifically for the project.
Production began two years ago, with plans to release the book shortly after Sabbath’s final show. Those plans changed following Ozzy’s death.
“Ozzy and Sharon wanted the book out soon after the final show in Birmingham but Ozzy suddenly passing away caused the music world to stop,” Halfin said. “Ozzy was fully involved with the book and he signed the book plates months before the final show, as did all the bandmembers.”
“So now we all thought the time was right, one year after ‘Back To The Beginning’, to announce the project. A book we all feel celebrates both Black Sabbath and Ozzy and illustrates just how important they are. I hope fans enjoy it.”
The book will be released in three editions, including two limited signed versions featuring book plates autographed by Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, alongside a standard edition housed in a cloth slipcase.
The announcement comes one year after Back To The Beginning, the sold-out farewell concert at Villa Park that reunited the original Black Sabbath lineup and featured performances from Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Tool, Pantera, Halestorm, Alice In Chains and many more.
Ozzy closed the historic night with a solo set before joining Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for four Black Sabbath classics, telling the crowd, “You have no idea how I feel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
