‘The Goonies’ Returning For Sequel With Original Cast?

It’s on the internet, so it must be true! Right? Apparently a ‘The Goonies’ sequel is in the works – and you can bet your ass the original cast is coming back!

As you know, the original movie came out 500 years ago – in 1985 – it follows a group of kids in Oregon who try to save their homes from foreclosure. Throw in a treasure map and you’ve got gold! Literally. The movie boast a monsterous cast – Lord Of The Ringss’ Sean Astin, Thanos (Josh Brolin), Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan and the band, the myth, the legend – Corey Feldman.

There’s now buzz online suggesting they’ll start discussing sequel ideas next summer, with a potential 2026 or 2027 release date!

Now, you’ve heard talks of a sequel over the years – so this is nothing new. BUT somehow, this seems real. Back in 2021, screenwriter Chris Columbus said that late original director Richard Donner once talked to him about a potential follow-up movie.

“He called me and said, ‘You know what we should do? We’re gonna get on my boat, smoke pot for three days and come up with an idea for ‘Goonies 2’”

“I said to Dick, ‘Well, first of all, I don’t smoke pot. But maybe if I come down, we’ll have a couple of drinks together and sit on the boat.’ It never happened. And I regret that. Because I would drop everything to do that right now.”

In 2020, Steven Spielberg (he wrote the original story treatment) spoke on a cast reunion call about why a sequel hasn’t happened, “Chris, Dick and I – and Lauren (Shuler Donner) – have had a lot of conversations about it. Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water.

“The problem is the bar that all of you raised on this genre, I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than The Goonies that we all made in the eighties.”

Well, sounds like they’ve found a better idea and we’re off n’ running! WOOOO!
