Good for Jack White! He’s reportedly cashed in on part of his music catalogue, selling a portion of his rights to Sony Music for an undisclosed sum.
Too bad, right? THAT is part of the story that everyone wants to know. How much did he get?!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the deal, which was finalized earlier this summer, only covers part of White’s extensive body of work. Still, it’s said to include music from across his career: The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, and his solo stuff.
Future recordings aren’t part of the deal. Neither White nor Sony have publicly commented.
White’s relationship with Sony runs deep. Back in 2012, his Third Man Records struck a partnership with the label not long after The White Stripes dissolved.
Jack White now joins a long list of heavyweights who’ve sold their catalogues in recent years. Bruce Springsteen’s $500 million deal with Sony made headlines in 2021. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Stevie Nicks, and more have followed suit. Just last month, Slipknot sold their catalogue to HarbourView Equity Partners for $120 million, while Pink Floyd, Queen, KISS, and Tame Impala have also inked deals.
In other news, White marked his 50th birthday in July by finally caving on something he’d long resisted: buying a cellphone. As he put it, he’s now the “reluctant owner of a cellular telephone”. Remember, he’s banned cell phones from his shows for years.
Are you surprised when artists sell of the rights to their music?
