Star Wars nerd have speculated for month – and now, the news was unveiled yesterday (April 17) by Gosling and director Shawn Levy in Tokyo, Japan (during Star Wars Celebration).

Star Wars: Starfighter is set five years after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, with production slated to start this autumn before premiering on May 28 2027.

Levy said the movie is “a standalone”, adding, “It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”

Gosling said, “The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

After Ryan’s comments, a picture flashed on the screen of his childhood Star Wars bedsheets (his mom sent it in).

“She still has them, obviously,” Gosling joked. “Naturally, she thought that it might be something that the fans would appreciate, but I suspect that she just sort of wants to justify years of hoarding.”

“As you can see from the picture, I guess I was probably dreaming about Star Wars before I even saw the film. And it’s probably framed my idea of what a movie even was.”

Until now, the movie (written by Jonathan Tropper for the last two years) has been under wraps.

It’s rumoured that Anora Oscar-winner Mikey Madison passed on a supporting role offer.

Levy’s previous Disney movie, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, is the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time, grossing $1.33 billion worldwide!

Of course, you’ll know that the next movie in the Star Wars universe to be released is The Mandalorian and Grogu (May 22, ’26).

Meanwhile, Gosling produced the recent horror flick Wolf Man, and is set to star in the sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary in 2026.

What are your thoughts on Gosling entering the Star Wars universe?
