Prince documentary blocked and “dead in the water”

July 23, 2024

Well, if you’ve been patiently waiting for that Prince documentary, you can stop. It’s been blocked and after multiple disputes is now “dead in the water”.

Apparently reps from Prince’s estate said the first cut of the Netflix film had “dramatic” factual inaccuracies and “sensationalized” certain events from his life.

Gotta feel bad for Ezra Edelman (O.J.: Made In America), who has been working on the doc for the last four years. During his time working on the project, he was given extensive access to Prince’s archives and produced a cut of the film that insiders saw.

The other sticking point was that the deal for the doc was a six-hour series but Edelman gave them nine hours, a violation of the agreement.

While things are said to be ‘dead in the water’, it’s said there’s willingness by all parties to compromise. Edelman, Netflix and Prince’s estate haven’t commented publicly. So we’ll see what’s said.

Prince died of a fentanyl overdose in 2016.

Shame, really. Hopefully they can come to an understanding. Love to see a good doc about Prince, his music, his life. Who else would you like to see a documentary about?
