Oh this’ll be juicy. Don’t act like you haven’t been waiting for the follow-up to HBO’s 2019 documentary on Michael Jackson, ‘Leaving Neverland’. It’s been announced (holy the name) and you don’t have long to wait!
Here’s what you need to know.
In 2019, HBO produced a two-part doc built around the allegations that Michael Jackson sexually assaulting two minors. Director Dan Reed used testimonies by Wade Robson and James Safechuck – who both claim that Jackson sexually abused them when they were kids.
Well, now get ready for the follow-up – a documentary called Surviving Michael Jackson – not. even. kidding.
Surviving Michael Jackson has been confirmed to be released on March 18 on the UK’s Channel 4.
HBO isn’t involved this time – after Jackson’s estate in 2019 sued the network over claims the doc violated a 27-year old non-disparagement clause from a ’92 concert movie for Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour.
The synopsis of Leaving Neverland II: Surviving Michael Jackson will explore the “difficult journey and its many twists, turns and setbacks” for Robson and Safechuck, including the public backlash over the years.
Yeah, no kidding. Can you even imagine what that was like for them?! Yikes.
Additionally, it’s said the doc will have a 3rd edition that will cover the upcoming 2026 trial of Robson and Safechuck vs. Michael Jackson’s estate. The third entry has yet to receive a release date, pending the trial’s duration.
As you likely know/remember, Jackson faced multiple allegations of child sexual abuse throughout his career and faced criminal charges that ended in a highly publicized trial in 2005. He denied all allegations and was found not guilty on all counts.
Surviving Michael Jackson is out in less than a month. And no doubt it’ll have you glued. Or at least I’ll be there, with popcorn.
