Is Denzel Washington Retiring From Acting?

August 29, 2024

Actor Denzel Washington recently sat down with EmpireOnline and hinted that his career may be coming to an end.

You’ve seen Washington on the big screen for the last four decades – his next role is in Ridley Scott’s upcoming ‘Gladiator II’, the sequel to the original 2000 movie that also stars Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.

Washington told Empire, “There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley. We had a great go-round the first go-round (on 2007’s American Gangster), and here we are.”

Denzel continued, “He’s engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film. He’s an inspiration. We should all want to feel like that at 86.”

Gladiator II hits theatres on November 22. Critics were assholes when the trailer came out. I just watched it, looks awesome.

Some critics had a problem with the choice of music, using ‘No Church In The Wild’ by Jay Z and Kanye West, questioning using a rap song in a movie about the Roman Empire. The song’s lyrics include, “Tears on the mausoleum floor / Blood stains the Colosseum doors.”

Other critics wonder why Washington has a New York accent, why most characters use the historically inaccurate British accent – while some dickheads were just straight up racist.

One of the main criticisms is that the trailer gives away much of the film’s key elements. And while I agree, who cares? If you want to see the movie, you’ll eventually see all that is revealed. Suck it up, buttercup.

IF Denzel is retiring, that sucks. He’s a great actor. What’s your favourite film of his?
