You know when you find someone you can create with and suddenly everything gets easier?
That’s Richard Patrick and Jim Louvau with A Place To Kill. No overthinking. No creative brick walls. Just two guys making music.
The collaborative project between Filter mastermind Patrick and There Is No Us vocalist, photographer and music video director Louvau released its debut seven-song EP, APTK, in June.
“It’s very spontaneous. It’s not over-thought out,” Patrick told Razor of Tucson, Arizona’s Rock 102.1 KFMA radio station. “We just get in, we write some lyrics, we put some vocals on it, and just make it work musically and in a short amount of time.”
That approach has already led to a second EP.
“And that’s why we’re already — we’ve released one EP already, and we’re already releasing a second, because there’s so much music that we could just keep pumping out because it’s so spontaneous and easy.”

The duo first crossed paths in 2008, when Louvau interviewed Patrick before a Filter show. Years later, Patrick caught Louvau performing with There Is No Us at The Roxy.
“We would always talk about starting a project together whenever we spoke or saw each other,” Louvau said.
The project’s first track, The Killing Field, was released in early 2023 as the B-side of Filter’s For The Beaten limited-edition vinyl single.
Now they’re looking at taking A Place To Kill to the stage.
“I could see something within the next couple of years, for sure. Something would be cool to do. Filter goes out, maybe A Place To Kill opens up for Filter. There’s a few ideas swimming around out there that we like.”
Patrick’s vision is stripped down: just the two of them, with smoke, fog machines and lights.
“It’d be just the two of us. It wouldn’t have a lot of people on stage — no dancers or anything crazy. Just us bringing it.”
He could also see A Place To Kill playing festivals.
There’s plenty more music coming, too. A second EP will be released as singles over the next couple of months rather than all at once, with videos also planned.
“We’re a very multidimensional, media-type situation where we really wanna have content out there for people to find and scroll through on Insta or whatever, YouTube or whatever.”
With the music coming quickly and a live show potentially on the horizon, is A Place To Kill just getting started?
