Greenwood Surprised by Joy of Radiohead Comeback, But New Music Remains Uncertain

Jonny Greenwood says he was “surprised” at how much Radiohead enjoyed their first shows in seven years but confirmed there are still no plans for new material.

The comeback tour, last November and December, featured four-night residencies in Madrid, Bologna, London, Copenhagen, and Berlin. Playing in the round, the band pulled from a 65-song catalogue each night.

“It was great to revisit songs we always felt were good and to find lots of other people now agree with us,” Greenwood told The Times. “And it was really nice to be playing and listening to Thom Yorke again. But I found it strange not to be doing anything new on the tour.”

Radiohead hasn’t released a studio album since 2016’s A Moon Shaped Pool. Greenwood acknowledged that all members are “doing new music elsewhere now,” including his own Oscar-nominated score for One Battle After Another.

“I have no idea whether Radiohead might release new material,” he said. “I mean, I’m surprised that the tour actually happened and that we all enjoyed it so much. But venues get booked so far in advance. To do another we would have to decide now, and even then it wouldn’t happen for 18 months.”

Greenwood added that the reunion was “fun and natural,” but there are no immediate recording plans. Their London shows broke attendance records at the O2, surpassing Metallica.

Meanwhile, Greenwood and filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson are seeking to remove their Phantom Thread music from the new Melania documentary.
