Given the last few months, this kinda seems fitting, doesn’t it? Green Day singer Billy Joe Armstrong says their long-awaited ‘’American Idiot’ movie is “eventually going to happen”.
You’ve heard talk about a potential movie adaptation of Green Day’s Grammy-winning 2004 album since 2011 (Tom Hanks was said to be interested in producing it).
Rumours suggested it was confirmed in 2013, with playwright Rolin Jones “finishing up” the script. In 2016, Armstrong said the movie was given the HBO green light (video above) and that he would be reprising his role as St. Jimmy from the Tony-winning Broadway & West End musical of the same name. Armstrong said to expec the project to be ‘surreal’ and ‘offensive’. Which sounds ’bout right.
Then, in 2020, Armstrong told NME the idea was ‘pretty much scrapped’.
Now, during an interview with Variet, Armstrong said “There was supposed to be (a movie), but it never panned out.”
“I’m sure something is gonna happen,” he continued. “The musical did so well and they’ve done it in Australia, Italy, Germany, England…It’s travelled so well. Eventually it’s going to happen, I would think.”
The ‘American Idiot’ LP revitalized Green Day’s career. A 20th anniversary reissue came out last October, with a new documentary, 15 unreleased demos, a New York City live show and B-sides and bonus tracks. This movie would be the cherry on top.
Meanwhile, a different Green Day movie is in the works. Apparently the band is producing a road trip comedy called New Years Rev (inspired by their early touring days). They’ve put out a casting call, looking for “punks, emo, hardcore, alternative and rocker young adults”.
And of course, Green Day was recently honoured with a star on Hollywood’s Walk Of Fame.
Lots going on in Green Day’s world. And it doesn’t show signs of stopping!
