The coming-of-age film inspired by Green Day has a new name, and it taps straight into the band’s history.

Have you even heard about this movie? It was originally called New Year’s Rev. It follows three high school friends who hit the road after mistakenly believing their band has landed a New Year’s Eve opening slot for Green Day. The story pulls from the band’s own early touring chaos around the era of their 1994 breakout album Dookie.
Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has been retitled Nimrods, a nod to the band’s 1997 album Nimrod. The cast includes Mason Thames, McKenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, and Fred Armisen. Green Day are also on board as producers and make appearances in the film. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, with a wide release date still under wraps.
Earlier this year, Green Day made noise with a high-profile performance at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara during the Super Bowl opening ceremony on February 8. Billie Joe Armstrong and company ran through a medley of hits, including American Idiot. And if you missed (’cause I initially did), Armstrong skipped the altered lyric “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda,” a line he’s used at recent shows.
This Green Day movie cool. Obviously. What’s the best band/artist based film of all-time? Do you have a favourite?
