Foo Fighters Found a New Drummer & Josh Freese Found A New Band

Looks like Foo Fighters have a new drummer. Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have said that former Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin is officially in! Are you surprised it wasn’t Taylor Hawkins’ kid, Shane?

If Rubin’s name rings a bell, it should. As mentioned, he played in NIN, was inducted into the Rock Hall with them in 2020, and also played for Angels & Airwaves. He’s worked with Danny Elfman, released solo stuff as The New Regime. The kid’s a monster.

Rubin replaces Josh Freese, who was fired from the Foos in May, just two years after being brought in to fill the massive hole left by Taylor Hawkins. Freese posted on Instagram that the band “decided to go in a different direction,” and no explanation was given.

Damn, Dave.

But you don’t have to feel bad for Freese. He’s now drumming with Nine Inch Nails. Again. They recently posted a picture of him back behind the drums with a simple message: “let’s fucking go.” He toured with them from 2005 to 2008 and apparently, he’s back!

Meanwhile, Foo Fighters start a tour in October ’25, starting in Jakarta before heading to Singapore, Tokyo, Osaka, and Mexico City.

Nine Inch Nails start the North American leg of their “Peel It Back” tour on August 6 in Oakland, California.

Foo Fighters’ latest album, But Here We Are, came out in June ’23. And now, it looks like their next chapter will be written with Ilan Rubin behind the kit.

Is it the start of something new? Or just another turn in the ever-spinning rock’n’roll lineup carousel?
