Down Is In The Studio Recording New Album

It’s been 10 years since you’ve heard new music from Down, the supergroup featuring singer Philip H. Anselmo, guitarists Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein, drummer Jimmy Bower and bassist Pat Bruders, and that’s about to change! They’ve entered the studio to start work on a new album, tentatively out later in the year!

Windstein recently did an interview with That Metal Interview and talked about the status of the band, “I’ve been in Down world (for the last few months) kinda, writing with Down and finishing up the writing for the album that’s (gonna come) out (in 2025) at some point… We’ve got 10 new songs, man. It’s awesome.”

In April 2024, Windstein, who also fronts Crowbar, told Concrete Spew about the new music’s musical direction, “It just sounds like Down. I mean, it sounds refreshing because we haven’t done it in so long, gotten together with me and the guys and done it in — fuck — 12 years or something. So it sounds like Down, I think, to me, it sounds more old-school Down. And the reason I say that is I think we got to a point where… Like, the ‘NOLA’ record is so simple, and it just wrote itself; it was so simple. And that’s how this is coming about, which is great.”

Down played a concert at Inn Of The Mountain Gods Resort And Casino in Mescalero, New Mexico on September 27, 2024. They were originally scheduled to play there on June 20, 2024, but the show was called off because of wildfires in the area. As a result of the postponement, Down also played two shows in Louisiana — on June 20, 2024 at Southport Hall in New Orleans and on June 21, 2024 at Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge.

Prior to Southport Hall, Down’s last concert was in September ’22 at the Blue Ridge Rock Festival in Alton, Virginia.

A founding member of Down, Windstein left the band in ’13 to focus on Crowbar and his family. He was replaced by Bobby Landgraf, Down’s former guitar tech who was previously in Gahdzilla Motor Company.

Windstein announced his return to Down in ’19.

Down hasn’t put out new music since the “Down IV – Part Two” EP in May 2014.

Meanwhile, Down will open shows for Danzig on a string of live shows on the U.S. West Coast in late March 2025.

Pretty rowdy supergroup, stoked that Down is back in studio making new music – what’s been your favourite of all-time?
