Chris Evans’ Return as Steve Rogers Sparks Backlash Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday

Not every Marvel fan is cheering. I don’t get this. You wanna get upset about something, how about Robert Downey Jr., who we know and love for playing Iron Man, is suddenly Doctor Doom??! They couldn’t find ANY OTHER ACTOR? Come on.

News that Chris Evans is returning as Steve Rogers for Avengers: Doomsday has triggered a wave of backlash across the MCU fandom, with some accusing Marvel Studios of playing it safe and undercutting Sam Wilson’s legacy as Captain America.

The reveal comes via a newly released teaser now screening in cinemas ahead of Avatar: Fire And Ash. In the clip, Evans’ Steve Rogers is shown riding a motorcycle across a farm before holding a newborn baby. A final title card confirms: “Steve Rogers will return for Avengers: Doomsday.”

The movie is set to come out on December 18, 2026. Here’s the trailer, if you missed it.

Evans first appeared as Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger (’11) and seemingly closed the chapter in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. That film ended with Rogers passing the iconic shield to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), signalling a clear transition of the Captain America mantle, while Steve returned to the past to live out his life with Peggy Carter.

I guess that’s why the reversal hasn’t landed well with everyone? This guy says Evans’ return is racist.

Some fans argue that bringing Rogers back undermines Wilson’s arc and diminishes Mackie’s role as the current Captain America. Others see the move as Marvel leaning on nostalgia rather than committing to its newer heroes.

I will say, the timing should raise eyebrows. As recently as June, Evans said he was “sad” not to be returning for Doomsday, suggesting his involvement may have been locked in later or deliberately kept under wraps.

Avengers: Doomsday will also feature Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU. As Doctor Doom. ‘Cause heaven knows, nobody else could have played him. Hell, even Chris Evans as Captain America didn’t sit well with me, after he was Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four.

Can no other actor play these roles? THAT is what’s screwed up about Marvel super hero movies. It’s not bringing Evans back to play Captain America. It’s that he played him in the first place.

Are you bent out of shape about Chris Evans’ return as Captain America? Or are you like me, and more ‘upset’ about Downey Jr. playing Doom?
