Did you hear about this? Avril Lavigne was recently appointed to the Order of Canada, a state order recognizing her contributions to music.
Canadian Governor General Mary Simon made the appointment last Friday (June 28), and said the order “recognizes individuals who have made positive and lasting impacts on communities here in Canada or who have brought honour to our country abroad.”
Simon said, “Avril Lavigne is one of the best-selling female artists of all time. With over 50 million albums sold worldwide, she paved the way for female-driven punk-rock music and continues to do so today.”
She added, “Generous with her time, she supports individuals with serious illnesses, disabilities and Lyme disease through the Avril Lavigne Foundation. A global ambassador for Special Olympics, she promotes inclusion and helps end the stigma around intellectual disabilities.”
Lavigne plays Glastonbury (her first time) today (June 30) on the Other Stage. Then she’s off to do a series of UK outdoor shows, including Cardiff Castle in Wales on July 2.
Avril’s latest album, ‘Love Sux‘, was released in February ’22.
If Avril is getting the Order of Canada for her contributions to music, which other Canadian artists should too?
