Just when you thought it was safe. More Wicked sequels may be on the horizon. Universal’s made it clear: they’re not done with Oz.
Speaking with Vulture, studio marketing chief Michael Moses hinted that “things” are already “underway” to push the saga forward. No blueprint yet, but the gears are grinding.
The first Wicked film was released in 2024 and torched the box office at over 500 million on a 150 million budget. Wicked: For Good came out last week, November 21, and kept the emerald fire burning. Jon M. Chu steered the second half of the stage epic to the screen, digging deeper into the fragile, fiery bond between Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda, played by Ariana Grande, as they embrace the power and cost of their identities.
Erivo. Grande. Bailey. Goldblum. Bode. Slater. Yeoh. Yang. The gang returns for another neon swirl through Oz.
Moses didn’t hide the weight of expectation. Wicked ignited a fanbase, and he says the studio feels a responsibility to keep exploring this universe. They don’t know the next chapter yet. But something is moving in the dark.
Grande and Erivo both said their emotional goodbyes to their characters.
Just before release week, Grande announced she had tested positive for COVID-19 and had to cancel major promo hits, including The Kelly Clarkson Show and several Q&A panels with Erivo.
What do you think about more “Wicked” movies? Is it necessary? Are they now just starting to mess with a classic movie?
