You’re about to hear new music from a voice you thought would never happen. For Soundgarden fans, that moment is getting closer, as the band’s final recordings with Chris Cornell continue moving toward release. This isn’t just another album announcement—it’s the final chapter of a story we know and love.
Drummer Matt Cameron has confirmed that Soundgarden’s final album with Cornell is currently being mixed, bringing the long-awaited project one step closer to completion.
Speaking on the Let There Be Talk podcast, Cameron said the band doesn’t have a release date yet, but the goal is to finish the record properly.
“We’re just gonna try to get this thing mixed, get it over the finish line, and then hopefully we’ll have a better idea what’s gonna come next,” Cameron said. “We’re just taking it one step at a time ’cause it’s been kind of a long process just to get to here.”
The album will feature eight songs with Cornell’s vocals, recorded before his death in 2017. Cameron confirmed that those performances represent the completed vocal tracks available for the record.
“I think that that’s pretty much all there is with vocals,” Cameron said. “We had some instrumentals left over that Kim wants work on. So maybe we’ll do some new stuff together, which would be fine by me.”
Soundgarden had been writing new material with Cornell before his passing, and the band has continued working to complete those recordings. In 2025, they shared that hearing Cornell’s voice again felt “good and invigorating,” describing the experience of listening to him “from over that horizon.”
The project follows years of work surrounding the band’s unreleased material, including a legal dispute with Cornell’s estate that was eventually resolved. By the end of 2025, Soundgarden said they were “pretty close” to finishing the album.
The band was also inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last year by Jim Carrey, who reflected on Soundgarden’s impact during the rise of Seattle’s grunge movement.
“When I heard Soundgarden for the first time, I wasn’t just excited. I wanted to put a flannel shirt on and run into the streets screaming,” Carrey said.
For fans who have been waiting nearly a decade, this album represents one final opportunity to experience the chemistry between Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd.
