If you’ve ever watched Rick And Morty and thought, “How has this madness not made it to the big screen yet?” you’re not alone. After years of rumours and wishful thinking, the show’s creators are finally giving fans the answer they’ve been waiting for!
Rick And Morty co-creator Dan Harmon has confirmed that a feature film based on the hit animated series is officially in development.
Reports about the project first surfaced in May after years of fan speculation, but Harmon has now made it official while speaking with ScreenRant during promotion for the upcoming spin-off President Curtis.
“Oh, that is on Ruby on Rails, baby. That’ll be released next summer,” he joked before quickly clarifying the real status of the project.
“But yeah, we’re picking away at that as a script right now, and the hope is to get that over to whoever we’re working for when we’re done writing that.”
Longtime series director Jacob Hair has been tapped to direct the movie. Hair has been part of Rick And Morty since Season 4 and currently serves as supervising director during the show’s ninth season.
“We are now able to confirm that there is a movie in the works,” Harmon said. “Jacob Hair is the director.”
Harmon also explained why developing a movie alongside the television series is much easier for an animated production than it would be for a live-action franchise.
“That’s a lot easier because you don’t have to wrangle cartoons’ schedules,” he said. “They’re drawings of people, and so they’re all in as far as writing the script. That can be picked away at the same time as doing the show. Yeah, that’s what’s going on with that.”

The announcement comes as Rick And Morty approaches the end of its ninth season. The finale, Field Of Dreams, is set to air on Adult Swim in the U.S. on July 26 before arriving on NOW and HBO Max in the U.K. the following day.
Immediately after the finale, Adult Swim will debut President Curtis, a new spin-off created by Harmon and James Siciliano. The series stars Keith David as President Andre Curtis alongside Stephanie Beatriz and Jim Rash.
Fans also know there’s plenty more Rick And Morty on the way. The animated series has already been renewed through Season 12, keeping the adventures of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith on television until at least 2029.
The idea of a Rick And Morty movie has attracted attention before. Zack Snyder previously said he’d be interested in directing one and even offered to help make it happen. Snyder later appeared in the series alongside James Gunn, with the pair playing exaggerated versions of themselves while joking about Gunn’s Superman.
“Word of advice – he’s the Man of Steel, not the Man of Conversation,” Snyder tells Gunn in the episode. “Do more shots of him punching.”
With a movie now officially moving through the writing stage, fans may finally get to see Rick and Morty’s multiverse adventures unfold on the biggest screen possible. Can a Rick And Morty movie live up to the wild expectations fans have built over the years?
