Is Jim Carrey About To Return As The Grinch?

Picture this. It’s Christmas. The snow is falling, the lights are glowing, and somewhere above Whoville, a green grouch is plotting his next move. More than 25 years after stealing the holiday spotlight, sounds like Jim Carrey may be getting ready to slip back into the Grinch’s oversized shoes!

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Carrey is in talks to return for a sequel to How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the blockbuster 2000 adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ classic story.

The original film, directed by Ron Howard, became a holiday staple, with Carrey’s manic, scene-stealing performance helping turn the movie into a Christmas favourite for a generation of viewers. Producer Brian Grazer is also reportedly involved in the potential sequel.

No plot details have been revealed, and the project has not yet been officially confirmed.

While the Grinch has appeared in several adaptations over the years, including the beloved 1966 animated television special and the 2018 animated film featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, many fans still consider Carrey’s live-action portrayal the definitive version.

The role, however, came at a cost.

In a retrospective interview with Vulture last year, Carrey revealed he nearly walked away from the film because of the extensive makeup process. The prosthetics reportedly triggered panic attacks, leading producers to bring in a specialist who had trained CIA operatives to withstand extreme conditions. Carrey said he relied on a variety of coping techniques to get through the lengthy transformation process, including smoking, listening to the Bee Gees and even punching his own leg.

The enduring popularity of the film was on display again last November when Carrey reunited with actress Taylor Momsen on the red carpet at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, marking the first time the two had been photographed together since making the movie.

Meanwhile, Carrey found himself at the centre of an unusual story earlier this year when his appearance at the 2025 César Awards sparked online conspiracy theories claiming a makeup artist had impersonated him. Organizers later issued a statement confirming that it was, in fact, Carrey attending the event.

What do you think of the idea of a Grinch sequel?
