We’re talking damn-near four decades later. FOUR. DECADES. A Spaceballs sequel has been confirmed and several key stars from the 1987 original are returning!
If you’ve kept up, since the movie premiered in ’87, fans of the Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis and Bill Pulman sci-fi comedy have been jonesing for a sequel. Well, last night (June 12), Amaxon MGM Studios made it official!
The video starts by taking shots at Star Wars, then gets into pot shots at Harry Potter, Star Trek and more. “Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy. But since then, there have been… a prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel to the prequel, a prequel to the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a movie spinoff of the TV spinoff which is both a prequel and a sequel…”
“Not to mention… 36 MCU movies with two different Robert Downey Jr.’s, DCU attempt number 1, DCU attempt number 2, 8 Harry Potter movies, a TV series remaking the same 8 Harry Potter movies… but in thirty-eight years there has only ever been one Spaceballs… until now.”
Director and star Mel Brooks shows up saying, “After 40 years, we asked ‘What do the fans want?’ but instead, we’re making this movie. May the Schwartz be with you.”
They haven’t set a release date, but it’s said you can expect Spaceballs 2 in theatres in 2027.
Yes, Mel Brooks is back as Yogurt, and Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis return to their original roles. Moranis’ return is especially surprising, as he’s been retired for over a decade. He’s even turned down offers to return for the recent Ghostbusters movies.
New additions in Spaceballs 2 include Keke Palmer, and Bill Pullman’s son Lewis.
Unfortunately Brooks isn’t directing the sequel. Instead Josh Greenbaum is. Spaceballs 2 is being described as “a non-prequel non-reboot sequel part two but with reboot elements franchise expansion film.”
This is outstanding news, isn’t it!? Spaceballs was excellent! Which movie do you wish they’d do a sequel for?
