Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway To Heaven’ copyright case back in Court!

June 13, 2019

Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” copyright battle continues (it’s already been going for several years) and the air should clear this September. US judges are reviewing the decision on whether Zeppelin stole ‘Stairway’s’ opening riff from Taurus ‘Spirit’. Both songs are below. You be the judge.

You may remember that back in 2016, it was ruled that Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway To Heaven’ did not infringe on Taurus’ ‘Spirit’ (which you can find on their 1968 debut album).

Interesting, when this 2016 ruling came down – the jury did NOT get to hear the songs in court, rather they made the ruling based on sheet music, showing chords and scales.

This time, the jury will get to hear both songs before making a ruling. Will that matter? You’ve heard both songs now – what do you think?

It’s expected another hearing of this case will happen in San Francisco in September ’19.
