WATCH : Upcoming Jack White produced documentary releases trailer

April 19, 2017

A new documentary coming to PBS chronicling some of the earliest musical recordings has dropped a pair of trailers today. The project, called American Epic, is backed by Jack White and T Bone Burnett, and was announced way back in 2015.
Check out both trailers below!

American Epic is an expansive (epic?) project, seeing a release as a four-part television miniseries hit PBS on May 16th and the accompanying documentary comes out in June. An American Epic book gets a release date of June 2nd, and a 100-song box set built from music highlighted in the series will arrive on May 12.

Nas, Elton John, The Alabama Shakes, Beck, Willie Nelson, Taj Mahal, Merle Haggard and more are reportedly featured in the project.

“In American Epic we can examine how important the fact is that when phonograph records were invented, for the first time ever, women, minorities, poor rural men and even children were given the opportunity to say whatever they wanted in song, for the whole world to hear, shockingly without much censorship. What they were allowed to say on phonograph recordings, they were not allowed to speak in public or in person. That is an astounding thought.” – Jack White, speaking on American Epic.

Vinyl and early recordings are a real passion project for White. White’s Third Man Records opened a vinyl pressing plant at the beginning of this year in Detroit. Third Man Records also made history by constructing a “space-proof” turntable and using it to play the first vinyl in space (which was, very appropriately, Carl Sagan’s “A Glorious Dawn.”)
