Ron Howard Set To Direct ‘Star Wars’ Spin-Off Movie

June 24, 2017

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard has agreed to step in and direct the upcoming “Star Wars” Han Solo spin-off movie. This comes hot on the heels of the surprise departure of its original director.

Howard is well-known for directing “Frost/Nixon” and “A Beautiful Mind”. And for being Opie on The Andy Griffith Show. If you get that one, wow, you’re old.

Lucasfilm’s president, Kathleen Kennedy, announced on Wednesday (June 21) that the movie’s directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (“The Lego Movie”) had left the project due to creative differences.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways,” Kennedy said in a statement on

Kennedy announced Howard’s hiring, saying, “At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago.”

Rumour has it Lord and Miller clashed with Kennedy and veteran “Star Wars” writer Lawrence Kasdan over the comedic direction of the movie.

This upcoming Han Solo movie is the second of three stand-alone “Star Wars” films. The first was last year’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
