Aquaman director James Wan goes off over Oscars snub

January 5, 2019

Guess you can’t really blame the guy. Aquaman director James Wan reacted how most people would after the movie failed to get an Oscar nomination in the VFX category. Watch the trailer again. How could this movie not get a nod?

Check this out, director Wan posted on his FB page a congratulatory message to toast the movie’s success. And when visual effects supervisor Kelvin McIlwain congratulated him, this is what Wan wrote back, “Kelvin, you and your department are the unsung heroes of this film. The fact that your VFX peers in the Academy aren’t recognizing or appreciating what we/you’ve all contributed to the film and cinema is a fucking disgrace”.

Instead of Aquaman, here is your Oscars VFX nominations: Avengers: Infinity War, Ready Player One, Welcome To Marwen and Mary Poppins Returns.

Again, you can’t blame the guy. When you work hard on something like this, you hope (and expect?) you’ll have as much success as possible (it made $866 million; the 5th highest grossing movie of 2018). I’d probably write the same thing.

Meanwhile, they’re already talking about developing Aquaman 2.
