‘Tron 3’ plans ‘cancelled’ by Disney

June 1, 2015

Disney has reportedly stopped plans to make a third Tron film.

Tron 3 has been in the works since 2011 but progress on the project has been slow. However, in April of this year it was reported that director Joseph Kosinski, who also shot 2010’s Tron: Legacy, was ready to start shooting in this fall. Tron: Legacy stars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde were apparently set to return.

Now The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Disney has decided not to move forward with the sequel, whose title was rumoured to be Tron: Ascension. Disney had reportedly been hoping to tempt Jared Leto to join the film’s cast but no formal offer was ever made.

Tron: Legacy opened to mixed reviews in 2010, but performed well at the box office, grossing over $400 million worldwide. The film was a belated sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic starring Jeff Bridges, who reprised his role and starred alongside Hedlund and Wilde in the 2010 follow-up.
