‘Time’ Includes ‘Feminist’ in Poll of Which Words Should Be Banned

November 15, 2014

Time Magazine is holding their 4th Annual Poll asking readers which words or phrases should be banned because they’ve been overkilled or are just annoying, with “OMG,” “YOLO” & “twerk” having won the 3 previous polls.

For some reason, though, among words like “bae,” “disrupt” and “literally,” Time included “feminist” among this year’s nominees.

Each word has a little blurb explaining why it was chosen, and for “feminist” it says: “You have nothing against feminism itself, but when did it become a thing that every celebrity had to state their position on whether this word applies to them, like some politician declaring a party? Let’s stick to the issues and quit throwing this label around like ticker tape at a Susan B. Anthony parade.”

That reasoning has the critcs chirping… places like 4chan who are trying to run up its votes, with Jezebel commenting, “Because this is the Internet, guess which word is winning?”

As of early this morning, “feminist” had 49 percent of the vote, followed by “bae” in second place with 12 percent, and all the other words were just in the low single digits.

The woman who wrote the poll article for Time, Katy Steinmetz, is standing by including “feminist”.
