System Of A Down In Studio
Influential heavy metal quartet System Of A Down have been teasing new material, for what seems like a very long time now. But a new picture posted to bassist Shavo Odadjian’s Instagram account could suggest the wait’s almost over.
The picture, posted May 16th (tagged in “Parts Unknown”) shows all four members of System Of A Down present in studio, with guitarist Daron Malakian off in the background, drummer John Dolmayan behind the kit and the back of lead singer Serj Tankian all above Odadjian’s forehead.
The band, as mentioned, have been teasing new material as far back as 2015 but some upcoming tour dates point to the meeting likely being a rehearsal for the shows.
Odadjian recently did an interview with Metal Hammer magazine, where he talked about the band’s upcoming June 9th performance at Download Festival;
“Of course there are bells and whistles – we just call it a System of a Down show. It’s nothing I can talk about beforehand, because when I walk onstage, things just happen. Yes, we will have a set setlist, and yes, I have been working on production, but once we start playing, we have two hours to deliver a fantastic show to our amazing fans,” said Odadjian.
The band members have been quite busy outside System, with Tankian singing a guest spot on the Game of Thrones: A Live Experience tour and Dolmayan devoting more time to his non-musical passions – his comic book store, Torpedo Comics. (Dolmayan once helped Linkin Park DJ Joe Hahn’s wife Heidi track down a copy of “The Incredible Hulk 1″for a paltry ten thousand dollars. He also brokered a deal for Jack White to purchase a copy of Action Comics #1 from 1938, the first appearance of Superman.)
Torpedo Comics started as an online comic book store in 2008, but will be celebrating a grand opening of their first brick and mortar store on May 19th, 2017.
Dolmayan’s also the one who gave the biggest tease of new System material, speaking earlier this year about how the band had wrote about 15 new tracks. System last released new material in 2005, with the double release of Mesmerize and Hypnotize coming out in May and November respectively.
“We’re not trying to make ‘Toxicity’ Part II, just because it was by far our biggest album. This needs to be something for a new generation of SOAD fans…” – Dolmayan.
System’s tour page has dates lined up from the first of June to the first week of July, including appearances at the aforementioned Download Festival, PinkPop, Rock AM Ring, and the Park Live Festival.
