Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil told the Sydney Morning Herald that the band plans to make a new album in the next few months for a 2016 release.

Thayil said, “No studio has been chosen and no songs are written yet. When we finish these shows in Australia (as part of the Soundwave festival), we’ll spend a month or more working on it. It’s definitely going to happen.”

Thayil said that 2015 would find Soundgarden spending less time on the road and more time in the studio: “We’re going to focus on the creative aspect of being a band and start doing some more writing and recording and come up with another album. But I think we’re probably gonna draw back the touring for that purpose.”

The new disc will be Soundgarden’s seventh studio effort and will follow up 2012’s King Animal.

  • King Animal was the band’s first album in 16 years and followed a lengthy hiatus that lasted from 1997 to 2010.
  • A new Soundgarden song, “Storm,” was recorded in May 2014 with producer Jack Endino and was released last fall as part of a box set collection of B-sides and rarities.
  • Lead singer Chris Cornell also recently revealed that he is working on his first solo album since 2009’s Scream.
