December 4, 2015

Robert Downey Jr. has confirmed that the new Spider-Man (played by British actor Tom Holland) will appear in Captain America: Civil War.

Holland’s will star in his own Spider-Man movie set for release in 2017, but it has long been rumoured that he will make his debut in the next Captain America film.

During a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Downey Jr. said, “[Don] Cheadle and I are just going, ‘Wow, dude, look at this.’ We’re now like the old guard, and our storyline carries real weight just because of our history in the [canon],” he recalled. “But we’re also looking around like, ‘Who thought that Falcon and Black Panther and Ant-Man and now Spider-Man…?’ I mean it’s like wow, this thing is just crazy.”

However, Chris Evans warned fans that Spidey’s Civil War spot is not yet guaranteed, adding: “You never know with Marvel. Sometimes they shoot things and then don’t use them.”

Evans and Downey Jr. are joined in the sequel by a massive cast of Marvel favourites including Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany’s The Vision and Don Cheadle’s War Machine. Captain America regulars such as Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie’s Falcon, Frank Grillo’s Crossbones and Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter all appear too.

Daniel Brühl will play supervillain Baron Zemo, William Hurt is reprising his role as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk and Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman has been cast in a currently unspecified role. The film is set for release on May 6, 2016.
