After working as an on-air personality on 99.3 The Fox (CFOX) in Vancouver since 2000 (wrapping up my time there as their Afternoon Host for over a decade), I was fired due to “corporate restructuring” on June 24, 2014.
Was I shocked? You bet. I left CFOX atop the heap of Vancouver radio ratings. Over the years, my radio show was voted “Best Show” multiple times by Vancouver radio listeners (Georgia Straight, Westender & The Province readers). But Corus set me up with a decent severance package… and I sold all my stocks the day after I was fired. Money wasn’t going to be an issue ‘til well into 2015.
So many people texted, phoned, emailed, twitter DM’d … asking if I was OK and what my plan was. Good question. Even I didn’t know what the plan was.
The initial plan was to chill out. Do nothing. Relax. Go to the park. Go for long walks. Read a book. Putter around the yard. Plant a garden. Spend time with my beautiful wife Jessica and my 2 boys James & Levi. So I took them to Tofino on Vancouver Island for a couple weeks. Rented a cabin on the beach. Built sandcastles. Went for nature hikes. Ate Tacofino every day.
And then I got the idea of making this website… to get into voiceover work. Maybe make an Indie Music blog and The TODDCast Podcast. None of which would be possible to do without a home studio. So much for the idea of rest and relaxation. Cue meeting after meeting with industry contacts, friends and associates. Lots of lunch meetings. Golf. Coffees. Once again, I’d become networking personified.
Long story short, Bro Jake set me up with gear he’d had from one of his recording studios… and our mutual friend Gerry hooked everything up over a weekend. I can’t say enough good things about those two. Class acts.
This is just the start. A new beginning. And I’m happy you’re along for the ride.
More to come my friends!
