Netflix teases first Defenders trailer
Rumours of a Defenders show coming to Netflix are almost as old as Netflix’s first run with Daredevil, but today rumours became reality as Netflix posted a very quick teaser trailer for the Defenders.
The teaser has no mention of the Defenders besides having all four of the central characters in the same elevator. Kristin Ritter’s Jessica Jones has probably the most impact in the teaser, also joined by Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and the newest member of the MCU, Finn Jones’ Danny Rand. The common enemy will be the Hand, the nefarious group of ninjas introduced in Daredevil’s first season.
(Before moving on from the actors and actresses set to appear in The Defenders, and while we’re talking about The Hand, it’s worth noting that there’s only one other official casting to tell you about – and it’s a bit of a surprise. Élodie Yung will return as Elektra Natchios. Whether this is through flashback scenes or through the Hand’s known ability to bring people back from the dead….will probably be revealed sometime during the show’s run.)
Some very observant fans have already noticed that the video ends precisely on a time stamp of 08:18:20:17, which could be a reference to an August 18th start date for the Defenders series. Also, a URL at the top-left of the video redirects to a mock website for the New York Bulletin, the newspaper where Karen Page of Daredevil fame (played by Deborah Ann Woll) currently works.
The showrunner Marco Ramirez offered scant details on how we can expect the heroes to come in contact with another – “Every one of them is following their own trail of bread crumbs, trying to unpack a mystery in New York…We wanted them all caught off guard. Once they’re in that room together, it’s kind of like, ‘Oh, s—, who are you?’”
If any of the four main names below the trailer are making you go ‘Oh sh–, who are you?” remember that Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist are all streaming right now on Netflix. And once again, expect the Defenders to start streaming on Netflix beginning August 18th.
