‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ sets record in China
Kung Fu Panda 3 has a set a record for the best opening for an animated film in China.
The DreamWorks produced movie took in $57m during its launch weekend in China and also topped the US box office.
Kung Fu Panda 3 is set in China with the film’s lead Po, played by Jack Black, meeting his biological father before confronting an evil supernatural warrior.
‘Kung Fu Panda’ will not be included in China’s 34-film annual quota for US-made films because it was co-produced in the country. As a result, it is also permitted to play longer than the 30-day limit on foreign films.
A Mandarin language version of the film will also be released in China featuring a voice cast that includes Jackie Chan.
Minions had previously held the record for the top animated opener in China, taking in $50m in its first eight days.
