KEVIN HART AND WILL FERRELL’S ‘GET HARD’ SLAMMED AS RACIST
Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell’s new comedy Get Hard screened at SXSW on Monday night (March 16th) and it got mixed reviews. During a Q&A after the film, one audience member approached the mic to say, “This film seemed racist as f***.”
Director Etan Cohen responded by saying, “The truth is, that was a delicate balance to find. When we were testing the movie, Ferguson was going on. It was hard to modulate…how far to push it.” Another viewer questioned whether the film was actually funny or just perpetuating stereotypes to which said, “When you do satire, that’s a big problem. That’s a dangerous thing. It’s a very small window — that’s what we’re trying to find.”
Get Hard tells the story of a millionaire who asks for help preparing for time in prison from an African American man whom he mistakes as a former convict.
