Breakout Irish singer-songwriter Hozier told MTV News that despite its title, his smash single “Take Me To Church” is actually about something else entirely.

Hozier explained, “‘Take Me To Church’ is about sex.” Asked about performing the song at a recent Victoria’s Secret lingerie fashion show, Hozier continued, “The song is sexual. (Lingerie) has something to do with female sexual agency and having control over your own sexuality and your own body. For me that’s something that the music deals with also.”

“Take Me To Church” is nominated for a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and comes off both Hozier’s debut EP of the same name and his self-titled first album, which arrived in October.

Hozier has said that the song is a slam against “institutions that undermine some of the natural parts of being a person,” adding that the video was inspired by a recent Russian campaign against homosexuality.

Hozier said he’s been happy with the rate at which his career has taken off so far: “There’s always a danger of kind of dropping an album and being a flash in the pan and, you know, I want to make a career out of this. So I’m very glad with the way we’ve done it and I always wanted to take my time with this. I was never in a rush, if you know what I mean.”

The video for “Take Me To Church” has been seen nearly 50 million times on YouTube. The song is currently Number Three on the Modern Rock chart.

  • Hozier will start a lengthy North American tour on February 6th in Los Angeles.
