Cancun is going to be in a new time zone, with the state of Quintana Roo announcing that it’s changing its time zone so that tourists can have an extra hour of daily sunshine.

Quintana Roo, which also includes the Mayan Riviera and popular tourist spots like Tulum and the Chichen Itza ruins, will be going from Central Standard Time to Eastern Standard Time, making the move ahead one hour on February 1st at 2 a.m.

So while the sun is currently setting in Cancun at around 5:30 p.m., after the change it would be around 6:30 p.m.

The Mexican government approved the time zone change after two years of lobbying by Cancun hotel owners and by the state government.
