Bands You Need To Know

October 29, 2014

11. Zach de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine.Every once in a while, the Music Gods look down on us mere mortals and decide we are worthy. Elvis Presley, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Metallica, Nirvana, Bob Marley. All are the work of gods.

The question is how do you find the next modern day “Gods”?

Thankfully, I’ve been a music geek for as long as I can remember. Since Dolly Parton sung about The Coat of Many Colors and The Little River Band told us it was time for a Cool Change. Since Wham, Duran Duran and Milli Vanilli were cool. Yes, that actually happened!

To answer the question, there’s so many cool bands you should check out. Try Best Night Ever, The New Electric, Arkells and Bend Sinister. For bands that should have been bigger try Hermano, Death From Above 1979, Clutch, Injected and Reef.

But this blog goes back to Rage Against The Machine.
They broke onto the music scene in 1991 chanting “Fuck you I won’t do whatcha tell me!” and introduced us to groove-funk-rap rock, quickly becoming one of contemporary music’s most popular and influential political bands. Then in 2000, they broke up. They did a reunion tour but nothing came of it.

If you haven’t heard Rage singer Zach Dela Rocha’s project he did with ex Mars Volta drummer Jon Theodore (now drumming with Queens of the Stoneage) “One Day As A Lion”, you are missing out.

“We comin’ like peoples army
For the people who can’t eat
Who work with no sleep
For the child
With no shoes on their feet”
(Taken from “One Day As A Lion” by One Day As A Lion)

Not sayin’ RATM were gods, but they certainly walked among them.

“It’s better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb.”

Who are your modern day Music Gods?
